Medical Interpreters Course Offered This Fall

The course is designed for individuals interested in becoming a professional Spanish/English medical interpreter. The eight-week course will meet Saturdays, Aug. 27 to Oct. 22 from 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. at IU Health La Porte Hospital, 1007 Lincolnway, Room B113. It includes 16 hours of practicum and clinical time. Times for the practicum are negotiable. The course includes 80 hours of classroom training, practicum, pre- and post-tests, a midterm exam and final oral/written exams. Participants will learn: The core knowledge and skills needed to handle advanced medical interpretation situations; how to organize and prioritize the knowledge needed for each medical encounter; the national code of ethics, standards of practice, roles of the interpreter and types of interpreting; advanced anatomy, physiology and medical terminology; memory and note-taking techniques; the role culture plays in interpreting.
