The city of Valparaiso and Porter County Recycling and Waste Reduction District will have a “Green Days” recycling event from noon to 5 p.m. on Aug. 19 and from 8 a.m. until noon Aug. 20 at Butterfield Pavilion at Fairgrounds Park. Some of the items to be accepted will be paper files for confidential shredding and recycling, courtesy of Secure Shred, a division of Opportunity Enterprises (up to two bankers’ boxes a household or business); discarded electronics, including computers, holiday lights, cell phones and microwaves; and plastic shopping bags – which will be exchanged for free reusable bags from Town & Country Market, WiseWay Foods and the City of Valparaiso, while supplies last. In addition, Porter County Recycling will offer home composting kits for $15 while Valparaiso Parks will give away free flower seed packets. The bag exchange and flower handouts are contingent on supply of material. As an extra, the city of Valparaiso Engineering Department will provide information about reducing storm water runoff. OE’s “Simply Amazing Market” will offer buy one, get one free deals on their fudge and gourmet popcorn. “We want the community to learn more and do more as stewards of the environment,” said Valparaiso Mayor Jon Costas.
