Lupus Foundation of America, Indiana Chapter (LFA) supporters are encouraged to register for Walk for Lupus Now Northwest Indiana on Saturday, Sept.10th at the Lake County Fairgrounds. Individuals, teams from businesses, schools, churches and civic organizations are invited.

One-, two- and three-mile routes will be offered in the non-competitive walk. A vendor show, silent auction and live entertainment will be included in the festivities.

More than 50 teams and an estimated 750 walkers participated in the 2010 event. With the help of record-breaking attendance, the 2010 walk raised $50,000 to support chapter programs and activities. Proceeds from the annual walk will help increase lupus awareness and education, maintain support groups and support lupus research.

“In addition to many teams that participate year after year, we have a large number of new teams participating in the walk,” said Michelle Hurst, co-chair of the event. “US Steel is among the new teams.” US Steel is a Gold Sponsor of the event. “Col. John Wheeler Middle School, Winfield-Jerry Ross Elementary and Eisenhower Elementary are among the new school teams that have registered,” said Hurst.

Last year’s largest team, Team Matthews, has already raised more than $7000 for the LFA. The team solicited several large sponsors for the walk, including Print Solutions, BMW of Schererville and Franciscan Hospitals. Team Matthews’ captain, Zoie Matthews, is a Crown Point High School student who has lupus. Her team raised more than $10,000 at last year’s event.

“We’ve really seen an increased interest in the walk since we’ve announced the new Lake County Fairgrounds location,” said co-chair Susan Colby. “The new location provides us with the opportunity to offer paved walking paths, expanded bathroom facilities and shelter.”

There is no registration fee to participate in Walk for Lupus Now Northwest Indiana. Incentive prizes will be offered for fundraising. As guests of honor, pre-registered lupus patients will receive a t-shirts and special gift bag.

Participants are encouraged to register online through a link on www.LupusIndiana.org. Those without Internet service can call the chapter office at (800) 948-8806 to register over the phone.
