Pat’s Liquors and Leroy’s in Porter are offering their town a chance to sample 20 microbrews all in one place on a fall afternoon.

Porter’s Perfect Pint, which is expected to become an annual event, starts this year n Hawthorne Park on Saturday, Oct. 15, from 1-5 p.m. If participants purchase a VIP pass, they will be able to jump the line with a noon start.

Liz Tilden, the owner of Pat’s, is the acknowledged microbrew expert in the presenting team, according to Leroy Slores, owner of Leroy’s.

“I use microbrews all the time,” said Slores. “But I haven’t sampled all 20 of the ones we will have there.”

He said he and Liz wanted to do something unique for their hometown. Originally, this would have been a July event, but there were too many conflicts with other offerings, so Liz suggested making it an Oktoberfest type of event.

Al proceeds will benefit the Porter Volunteer Fire Department and the parks department.

With that in mind, another business, Northern Tent Company, gave the duo a break on the big tent they will use, as well as on tables and chairs.

“We just started talking and came up with this,” said Slores.

“It will be a fun time to mix with friends and people who just want to have a good time.”

Liz said the idea is indeed to offer samplings to local clients.

“We have a bunch of local breweries represented,” she said. “Three Floyds (Munster); Lafayette (Lafayette); Crown Brewing (Crown Point); Figure 8 (Valparaiso); Backroad Brewing (LaPorte) . . . we kinda stuck with fairly local brewers.”

Many of these microbrews are offered in restaurants and there are seasonal offerings as well. Liz said the idea is to let someone try something they’ve wanted to sample or discover a new brew.

“We definitely hope to make this an annual event,” she said. An area native, she sees this as an extension of customer service, as started by her dad and mom. As the oldest daughter, she is happy to carry on the family business as a second-generation business owner.

“We been in business since 1974 and I’ve been in charge 23 or 24 years,” she said.

“We wanted to put something out there within our little area here. What’s nice is people can really learn from this.

“Craft beers offer so many options. Plus, either the brewers themselves or their representatives will be there to explain. Everyone’s got an opinion on their beer. Certainly, tasting it is the best way to find out which one you might like to pursue.”
