The tenth Annual Peace and Socialo Justice Symposium on Human Rights will run from 9 a.m. until 4 p.m. on Saturday, Nov. 5 in the Harre Union Ballroom at Valparaiso University.

The keynote speaker, Priscilla Ruiz Guillen, will present: “Women’s Rights and Indigenous’ Rights are Human Rights.”

She will draw on her experience from the human rights situation in Chiapas, Mexico and her work with the Fray Bartolome de las Casas Human Rights Center and the role of international solidarity. This event is CORE approved.

The event is sponsored by the Office of Multicultural Programs, the Cultural Arts Committee, the Department of Education, AAA, BSO, LIVE, Alliance, SALT, Residential Life, the Chapel of the Resurrection, the Department of Foreign Languages, Greek Life and student volunteers at Valparaiso University.

Individual focus sessions will be presented by VU students that will be centered around the theme of Human Rights. Information tables will be set up for those wanting how to get involved.

The hunger banquet will take place during the event as well.

All proceeds go towards the World Relief Fund. Admission: students $5; faculty/staff/community $7 with advanced registration.

Rebuilding Portage pancake breakfast Nov. 5

Rebuilding Together Portage will sponsor a pancake breakfast from 8-10 a.m. on Saturday, Nov. 5 at the Applebee’s restaurant, 6211 U.S. 6, Portage. Last seating will be at 9:45 a.m. Proceeds benefit the program’s 2012 Build Day.

Rebuilding Together is the nation’s leading non-profit working to preserve affordable homeownership and revitalize communities. A network of more than 200 affiliates provides free rehabilitation and critical repairs to the homes of low-income Americans.

Memory Lane Memorial Park Final-Expenses Seminar

A free seminar on final expenses will be offered on Saturday, Nov. 5, at Memory Lane Memorial Park and Funeral Chapel, 6305 West Lincoln Highway, Crown Point . There will be two session times from which to choose: 3-4 p.m. and 5-6 p.m.

Thom Kimmel, financial consultant, will be speaking on “How to Set Up a Living Will and Trust.” Scott Gross, executive director of Memory Lane, will speak on “Final Expenses for a Funeral and Cemetery Costs.” Every attendee will receive a free copy of Kimmel’s book, “A Husband’s Gift: 7 Things Your Wife Needs to Know Before You Die.”

Antique Road Show and Craft Fair at Hobart

Brentwood at Hobart is hosting an Antique Road Show and Craft Fair, Saturday, Nov.12 from 10 a.m.-2 p.m. JW III Auction Service will be offering free appraisals on items such as coins, war memorabilia, jewelry, sports items, watches and many more. Appraisals may be limited depending on the demand.

Craft booths and vendors will also be available to stop and shop for the upcoming holiday season. Refreshments will be available to purchase during this event. This event is open to the community. Brentwood at Hobart will also be accepting non-perishable food and personal care items for the Hobart Food Pantry.

Portage Township YMCA’s Turkey Trot ready to run

“Finish the Feast” is the theme of Portage Township YMCA’s 11th Annual Turkey Trot. This 4 Mile Run/5k Non-Competitive Walk and 1K Kids Fun Run takes place at 7:30 a.m. on Thanksgiving morning, Nov. 24. The course will start and finish at the Portage Township YMCA and utilize the Rails to Trails.

Proceeds from the Turkey Trot will go towards the Portage Township YMCA’s Youth Scholarship Fund which provides financial assistance for children and families that are not able to afford programs and services at the Portage Township YMCA. Awards will be presented after the race for the 4 Mile runners.

The event will feature a computerized chip timing system. Register by Nov.10 to avoid late registration fee. Participants can register at or download a form on the YMCA website. Fees include a commemorative Wicking Event Shirt. Walk in registration will take place from 6:30 a.m. to 7 a.m. on Thanksgiving morning.
