A leading dental health provider for children and adults, Kool Smiles has seen an increase in patients through positive patient referrals and will continue to expand to meet the growing demand.

Kool Smiles has 10 locations in the Hoosier state, including 3 offices in Northwest Indiana – in East Chicago, Gary and Highland. The dental health provider already employs a total of 232 across Indiana, and now it has plans to open four new offices and add 88 more jobs within the next year.

Lowell resident and Indiana University-Northwest graduate Susan Mullenix is one of the Hoosiers who have benefited from Kool Smiles’ positive impact on Indiana’s economy. She was hired in January and works as a dental hygienist for all three of the Kool Smiles offices in Northwest Indiana.

“As a big kid at heart, I knew this was a place I wanted to work, because it is so welcoming for kids and families,” Mullenix said. “I was raised in a low-income home, just like many of the people we serve. We didn’t have these kinds of places growing up, so I know how valuable they are to a community today.

“I love working at Kool Smiles because everyone here is dedicated to providing the highest-quality care,” Mullenix added.

“Having Kool Smiles in our community means even more citizens are able to take good care of their children’s teeth from an early age,” said State Rep. Charlie Brown, D-Gary, ranking minority member of the Public Health Committee. “This is particularly important in Northwest Indiana because there is a huge shortage of Medicaid providers in our area, as well as a great need for affordable dentistry.

“I’m happy this provider is not only improving our health care options, they’re also adding jobs to our economy. It’s a win-win situation,” Brown added.

Nationwide, Kool Smiles has over 250 open positions and will continue to provide jobs from entry level front office positions to several hundred professional positions, including General Dentists, Pediatric Dentists, Endodontists and Oral Surgeons.

“Creating jobs is a wonderful outcome of providing great care to our patients.” said Dr. Polly Buckey, D.D.S., M.S., a board certified Pediatric Dentist who serves as a spokesman for Kool Smiles. “We are delighted that our focus on expanding access to underserved communities is being met by happy and returning patients.”

Kool Smiles has already added several offices this year, with plans to open an additional five nationwide before year end and continue growth through 2012. This expansion supports Kool Smiles’ ongoing commitment to closing the dental care gap that exists among middle and lower income families. Despite strides made in recent years, access to care continues to be a serious problem, especially for children in low-income households. According to the Pew Center for The States, an estimated 16.5 million kids still go without even basic care each year.
