Porter Regional Hospital to offer tours for Chamber After Hours

Duneland area residents and Chesterton / Duneland Chamber members are invited to take tours of the new Porter Regional Hospital on Wednesday, July 11, during the chamber’s After Hours event.

Guests are to meet in the main lobby, where they can enjoy light refreshments and socializing prior to taking tours of the new facility with CEO Jonathan Nalli and his staff.

The first tour will begin promptly at 4 p.m. Tours will last approximately one hour, so comfortable walking shoes are recommended. Tours will be given continuously over the following hour, with the last tour beginning promptly at 5 p.m. Tour capacities are limited; registration and early arrival is recommended.

Summer concert, film series continues with Lee Murdock, Scooby Doo

Westchester Public Library’s free concert and family film series continues on Friday, July 13, at the Bandstand in Thomas Park with Lee Murdock’s Music of the Great Lakes. The concert will be followed by the film, “Scooby Doo: Curse of the Lake Monster” at dusk (about 8 p.m.).

Lee Murdock, a renowned Midwestern musician, sings a vivid portrait of life on the Great Lakes. Noted as an accomplished instrumentalist on the six and twelve string guitars, Murdock combines ragtime, Irish, blues and folk styles with his flair for storytelling in songs.

Jewelry making classes at Portage library

Mara Wible, formerly of MegaBeads, will lead jewelry making classes Fridays in July.  Pre-registration at the library is required before each class.  Cash payment will be taken at registration.

Bereavement support group meets

Indiana University Health La Porte VNA Services will host a free bereavement support group series.

“Moving from Grief to Hope and Healing” will be held July 18, 25, Aug. 1 and 8. All meetings will be held at the First Church of God, 2020 E. Lincolnway in La Porte, from 5 to 6:30 p.m.

Those who have experienced a recent loss or those who are unable to work through their grief are welcome to attend. The support group focuses on the grieving process and offers the support of others undergoing a similar experience. The group is confidential and informal. Attendees are provided the opportunity to speak or simply listen, and offer support through sharing of experiences and coping strategies. The hospice chaplain facilitates the group.

Bridge O’Rama tournament winners

The Portage Area Bridge O’Rama Committee recently announced the year-end winners its annual bridge tournament.

Monthly high score winners in Division “A” include Ray and and Lila Cohen of Valparaiso, Carroll and Sharon Massey, Don and Peg Mohar and Mike and Mary Brown.

Monthly high score winners in Division “B” include Joanne Cox and Phyllis Brooks, Donna Penn and Judy Tarpo,    Barbara  Stroud and Trudi McKamey, and Jill Wirth of Odgen Dunes and Sharon Massey.   A grand slam award went to Joanne Cox and Phyllis Brooks.

The tournament, which consists of six monthly matches played in the home, will resume in October.  Matches are not played in January or February.

Funds needed for new vet van

The Porter County Council of American Legion Posts, which encompasses six posts, is again taking up the task of raising the money necessary to purchase a new van for veterans. 

The present 2005 van is used daily, the miles are piling up and is showing signs of wear.  In a few years, a new Ford Explorer could cost around $20,000.

Lake Area United Way exceeds goal

Lake Area United Way’s 2011-12 annual campaign raised $4,838,555, passing the community goal of $4,750,000 by $88,555. 

The results were announced during the Lake Area United Way (LAUW) Casino Talent Competition and Campaign Finale held at The Venue at Horseshoe Casino in Hammond. 

"This is an incredible achievement in its own right, but is particularly remarkable given the challenging economy," said LAUW Campaign Chair Tom Keilman, director of government and public affairs, BP North America.
