Gabis Arboretum at Purdue Northwest’s fall programs are now available online at The programs cover a variety of nature, health and recreation topics geared toward adults, children and families.

Programs include a Nature Retreat Day, art series, bird walks and classes on preparing your garden for winter. Several programs will be held in collaboration with the Porter County Purdue Extension.

The arboretum will continue to offer its annual Trail of Scarecrows exhibit in which youth groups compete by reading a book based on a theme and build a scarecrow to represent that book. The theme this year is friendship. Scarecrows are displayed throughout the month of October and the arboretum’s guests are given the opportunity to vote on their favorite.

“The Trail of Scarecrows program has been an annual favorite exhibit to engage the arboretum with school groups, scouts and other youth organizations.,” said Stephanie Blackstock, executive director. “Last year’s winners included the Gingerbread Man, Pete and his Four Groovy Buttons and Rainbow Fish.”

Family-friendly activities continue throughout October with the Fall Family Weekend on Oct. 12-13 featuring hayrides, crafts and tours of the Railway Garden. A new event, Trick or Trees: Halloween in the Railway Garden will be held from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Saturday, Oct. 26 featuring an owl program, reptile show and trick-or-treating.

Check the arboretum’s website for more information on all upcoming fall activities.
