Three generations of one family raced in the Indiana Ski Council state races on Saturday, February 8, at Boyne Highlands, Michigan. From left, grandfather Bill Leavitt is 78, grandson Darren Hart is 10, daughter Kim Zajicek is 45, and grandson Matt Hart (with trophy) is 17. All are serious competitors against each other.

A grandfather, daughter and two grandsons raced in the Indiana Ski Council Indiana State Races at Boyne Highlands, Michigan the weekend of February 7-9.  Bill Leavitt, 78, of Valparaiso, beat one grandson, Darren Hart, 10, but was beaten by another grandson, Matt Hart (17) and daughter, Kim Zajicek (45).  All of them live in Valparaiso.

Bill won second place (silver) in his division, while Kim and Matt won first place (gold) in their divisions.  Darren won third (bronze) in his division.  Matt won a huge trophy for being “Fastest Junior” (3-17 age group).  This is the third year that the three generations of Bill’s family have competed together.  Another grandson, Mike Zajicek, 17, is also a successful racer and has defeated his grandfather on occasion.  Grandma Ann and daughter Kim’s husband, Pete Zajicek, are also skiers, but don’t race.  In this family, the grandchildren have a very different view of Papa Bill than is typical of most grandchildren and grandfathers.

They all competed as part of the Duneland Ski Club, which finished second among the Indiana ski clubs competing.  Other Duneland racers, included Dave Hubinger (83, Crown Point, gold medal), Jack Anderson (77, Porter, gold), Bill Stover (70, Valparaiso, Silver), Charlie Cleek (70, Westville, silver), Henry Bottando (68, Valparaiso, gold), Chris Disher (68, Valparaiso, silver), Phil May (64, Portage, gold), Candy Bock, 60, Portage, crashed), JoAnn Cleek (68, Westville, gold), Pete Resetar (53, Chesterton, gold), Brad Briar (41, Tinley Park, Illinois, gold), Heather Seger Briar (47, Tinley Park, Illinois, gold),
