Honorable David L. Chidester

Office sought: Porter County Superior Court Judge

Name:  Honorable David L. Chidester

Party: Democrat

Family: I am married to Mary R. Harper, retired judge.

Political Experience: I have served 18 years as the judge in Porter Superior Court #4. I preside over the busiest court in the county and have the least amount of undecided cases.

Occupation:  Judge, Porter Superior Court #4.

Previous Government Experience:  From 1981-2002, I served as a federal public defender, having been appointed by multiple federal judges for jury trials. I represented the Porter County Animal Shelter, pro bono, to seize and secure abused and neglected animals.

Organizations:  Indiana Judges Association, Porter County Bar Association, Valparaiso Elks #500, Associate Member Gettysburg Battlefield Licensed Guides, The Civil War Trust, Friends of Stone River Battlefield, Friends of Lew Wallace Study and Museum.

Goals:  This is a challenging time for many people in our community. Some have mental health issues and wind up in our criminal justice system. I want to continue to operate the successful Restoration Court I began in 2019, in order to help the mentally ill.  Studies show consistency in dealing with the same judicial officer is important to the success of the program participants.

Porter Superior Court #4 operates at 143% of a full-time judicial caseload. We resolve our cases promptly and have the lowest number of undecided cases of any court in the county. As a part of this caseload, I am available 24/7/365 to police officers and prosecutors to review applications for search warrants in public safety matters.

Organizations: Indiana Judges Association, Women’s Lawyers Association, Indiana State Bar Association, Porter County Bar Association, Valparaiso Noon Kiwanis, Women United

Goals: As a former Deputy Prosecutor and Magistrate, and now as your Circuit Court Judge, I have spent the past 27 years protecting our communities, children and vulnerable adults.   Every day, my main goal is to balance justice and the safety of our citizens with providing help to parties who appear in our courts.  It has been an ongoing goal for me to find ways, through grants or programming, to address pervasive issues such as domestic violence, substance abuse, and delinquency.  I am committed to furthering programs like our Teen Drug Court and Truancy Court.  I also serve as a judicial liaison on the Mayor’s Commission Against Domestic Violence and Abuse where various agencies in our justice system and our community come together to work on solutions to issues related to domestic or family violence.  A judge has an obligation to serve the community not only inside, but also outside our courtrooms.
