I discovered TOPS back in 1968 when my brother, who had just returned from Vietnam, read an article about the organization in the local newspaper. We were living in Chicago at the time and discovered a TOPS group that met at a local church. It wasn’t long before my brother signed me up for the program.

At only 16 years old, I weighed around 250 pounds. I was a TOPS member for two years and lost 46 pounds, but I stopped going during my sophomore and junior year of high school.

I returned to TOPS later in life when I needed to lose weight again. I realized that you need a plan and an organization that’s behind you. It’s extremely helpful to have a group of people that are there in your corner and going through the same thing. It’s a true support system.

I now belong to a TOPS chapter in Demotte, Indiana, which is about 20 miles from my home. My wife is also a member of this chapter.

I managed to lose the weight using a combination of portion control and regular exercise. I limited my calorie intake to 1,500 calories a day and I did a lot of walking.

Losing the weight took a substantial amount of pressure off my knees. I’ve had quite a few knee surgeries in my lifetime, and I learned from my doctor that for every pound of weight you lose, you lose four pounds of pressure off your knees. So, if you lose 10 pounds, that’s 40 pounds of pressure lifted off your knees!

I was really surprised to learn that I earned the title of 2019 TOPS Indiana King. I realize there are other TOPS members who’ve lost more weight than I have, but I understand all the rules and regulations about royalty winners, and I know I met my weight loss goal as well as met all the requirements for the Indiana King.

I’m glad TOPS has been around for quite a long time. My advice to others looking to lose weight is to consider joining this organization. With TOPS, there are no gimmicks. Moreover, TOPS offers different ways to achieve your weight loss goal i.e., portion control, exercise, healthy eating, and more. You get to choose what works best for you. TOPS doesn’t cost an arm and leg either. In fact, it’s the most reasonable organization I’ve ever seen. A combination of all these factors is what makes TOPS successful. And you will lose weight as long as you have determination and choice. In other words, you can either choose to stay where you are or better yourself. The choice is yours.
