Fall is a time to have fun, but it is also a time of preparation. Generations ago, families put harvest foods away with canning then freezing. We were always told to eat our fruits and veggies to stay healthy. In these days we know it takes that and more. For our protection, we have vaccines to help guard our health, such as the flu shot, especially important for seniors. As we age, our immune system starts to weaken somewhat as well, and our medical community recommends consideration of an annual flu vaccine.

For this reason, Residences at Coffee Creek Senior Living is partnering with Walgreens to safely provide flu shots once again via drive-by. You will not have to leave the comfort of your car—or truck or van! Mark your calendar for Friday, Oct. 22. Beginning at 9:30 a.m. and continuing through 1:30 p.m. Flu shots appropriate for seniors will be provided in our parking lot at Residences at Coffee Creek Senior Living, 2300 Village Point in Chesterton. A complimentary box lunch will be provided to everyone who takes their flu shot. We urge you to register as soon as possible as flu shots will be limited. To register call 219-921-5200 or register online at www.ResidencesSeniorLiving/events. Flu shots are covered by Medicare or certain Medicare replacements; Walgreen’s recommends you contact your plan for details. Be sure to bring your Medicare and insurance cards with you.

The frequency of flu cases seemed low in 2020 by comparison to previous years. Social distancing, wearing masks, seemed to have a positive impact. Our residents will be receiving the opportunity for the flu shot early in October with our long-term care pharmacy In Touch. In recent years, the CDC reports, it is estimated that between 50 and 70 percent of seasonal flu-related hospitalizations have occurred among people in the age group of people 65 and older.

The CDC also encourages the flu vaccine as the best way to protect against the flu. Every year the flu shot is updated to keep pace with the emerging strains. Also, they remind us, that immunity wanes over a year so annual vaccination is needed to offer the best protection. September and October are the recommended best times for seniors to obtain the vaccine throughout the upcoming season.

As always, the best prevention is avoiding those who are sick and/or coughing or sneezing and paying attention to proper hand washing. That is our continuing practice at Residences at Coffee Creek whether or not it’s flu season. It is what we do every day to safeguard our seniors. We are committed to providing support for seniors when they live inside our community at Residences at Coffee Creek or whether the places, they call home are located in Chesterton, Valparaiso and surrounding communities.

Whether we are presenting the area’s top professionals for educational webinars and presentations or partnering with local pharmacies specializing in senior care, we strive to offer choices for good health. And that includes our delicious nutritious menus, too, because we still need to have our fruits and veggies! Call us today to schedule your personalized tour if your preparations for winter may include a move before the snow flies 219-921-5200.
