Chesterton Feed and Garden Center’s tradition of a resident turkey continues this year. The annual event began when Chuck Roth, owner of Chesterton Feed & Garden Center, brought in one of his pet turkeys for the customers to enjoy. Having raised poultry for many years, he was surprised at how many people had never seen a live turkey. Local schools began calling Chuck to bring the turkey into their classrooms and teach the students about turkeys and their habitat. Turkeys are very sociable birds and responded well to the children.

“Turkeys love attention. Even something as simple as talking to a turkey is enough to make them happy and puff out their feathers,” says Chuck.  After several years and many turkey visits, schools began to bring their students to Chesterton Feed and Garden Center for Turkey Tours, a tradition that has carried over to the present day and has created many fond memories for students and teachers alike. Students learn fun facts about turkeys and their living habits.

First generation turkey visitors are now bringing their children to see the live turkey, passing down an enjoyable learning experience. Says Chuck, “It’s great to see so many new faces during our Turkey Tours, as well as familiar ones. Our resident turkey’s name has originated from many sources, such as employees and friends. We even had a traditional “Tom” one year.”

Any school or group that wishes to set up a Free Turkey Tour may call Chesterton Feed & Garden Center to reserve a date and time.

The general public is welcome to visit “George” until Thursday, Nov. 25 at any time during business hours. Begin your tradition this year and come see “George” the turkey at Chesterton Feed & Garden Center. Chesterton Feed & Garden Center is open year round, Monday-Friday 9:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m., Saturday 9:00 to 5:00 p.m., and Sunday 10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. For more information call Chesterton Feed & Garden Center at 219-926-2790.
