Farm produce center looking ahead to strawberry season

Life on the farm is always unexpected. This spring’s unusually high rainfall has made things particularly challenging for a local farming family, the Johnsons. Usually by this time in June the you-pick fields at Johnson’s Farm Produce are full of people picking fresh strawberries. While the picking schedule is delayed this year, it might be worth the wait.

“Despite all the rain and cool weather, the blossoms are huge. That is usually a sign of big berries to come!” said owner Rod Johnson Jr.

Strawberry season will kick off on Saturday, June 15, with this year’s first Strawberry Festival at Johnson’s Farm Produce in Hobart. Festival weekends include tram rides to the fields to pick berries, family friendly contests and food booths. It also includes access to the new expanded Fun Farm. Activities include train rides, pedal cars, goat village, jump pad and pillow, giant pipe swing and much more.

Said owner Steve Johnson, “After a long and challenging spring, the farm is ready for some fun. We are looking forward to celebrating at our Strawberry Festival.”

Festival dates are June 15-16, June 22-23 and June 29-30. Then blueberry season starts in July.

The you-pick strawberry fields will open June 15 and be available for picking weekdays until the strawberry season is over.

Johnson’s Farm Produce is the area’s largest farm market and garden center. Fresh produce is available June through October. Weekends at the farm are dedicated to festivals that offer families access to the you-pick fields, food booths, and kid activities in the Fun Farm. You-

pick fields offer customers the chance to pick strawberries, blueberries, raspberries, blackberries, sunflowers, pumpkins and garden-fresh produce.

Information on seasonal availability can be found at www.johnsonsfarmproduce.com.

FYI:  Strawberries are the only fruit that wear their seeds on the outside.

On average, there are 200 seeds in a strawberry.
